Spatial and Temporal Vision

How is information combined across the basic spatial frequency and orientation channels in the primary visual cortex? How does the human visual system integrate visual information through time? Does the visual strategy observers adopt for simple detection, contrast discrimination, and size discrimination different from that an optimal observer would adopt?
When observers try to detect faint signals embedded in background clutter (visual noise), can they use knowledge about the statistics of the background to adjust (optimize) their strategy (i.e. off-frequency looking)? How do human observers identify letters? How good do observers learn to do visual tasks? How does observer performance change when the signal they are looking for can vary in size and shape? Is spatial frequency and orientation coded independently or jointly coded? What can and cannot infer about visual processing when adding external noise?
