About: Craig K. Abbey

Craig

Dr. Abbey received his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Arizona in 1998 under Prof. Harrison H. Barrett. He was a postdoctoral fellow in Medical Physics and Imaging at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA Program in Biomedical Physics.  He was an assistant Professor at the UC Davis Department of Biomedical Engineering from 2001 to 2004, before coming to the psychology Dept. at UC Santa Barbara where he holds a research faculty position.

Dr. Abbey’s research investigates how statistical properties of noisy images influence the ability of observers to perform visual or quantitative tasks.  The primary application of this research is evaluating diagnostic medical imaging systems where acquisition noise and background clutter can both mask disease processes.  Approaches used consist of theory from Image Science as well as experimental paradigms from visual psychophysics.
